紅唐（べにとう）とは、紅唐桟の織物の色のような黄みがかった渋い赤色のことです。『弁柄色（べんがらいろ）』と同じとする説もありますが弁柄色よりも鮮やかな色になります。

紅唐とは、もともとは紅色の『唐桟（とうざん）織り』のことです。唐桟織りは緻密で光沢があり地合いのなめらかな綿縞織物（めんしまおりもの）で、天保年間には身分男女を問わず冬着の生地として大人気でした。特に珍重されたのが赤い地色の『紅唐桟（べにとうざん）』です。親しみと憧れをこめて『紅唐』とよばれるようになり、それがいつしか色名として定着しました。

『唐桟』は唐桟縞（とうざんじま）とよばれる織物の一種です。『桟留（さんとめ）』または『桟留縞（さんとめじま）』ともよばれ、とくに舶来物の高価な桟留を『唐桟留（とうざんどめ）』と呼びました。そこから略して『唐桟』と呼ばれるようになり、やがて桟留縞織物の総称となりました。なお、桟留の由来はインドのサントメ地方から伝わったからだと言われています。

ちなみに、紅唐の漢字を逆にした『唐紅（からくれない）（＝韓紅）』という色名もありますが、こちらのほうが古くからある伝統色であり鮮やかな紅色です。
