色の説明

琥珀色（こはくいろ）とは、琥珀の石を思わせる透明感のある黄褐色のことです。英名では『アンバー（amber）』。

日本古来の色ではなく、明治以降の文学作品から見られるようになる色名で、西洋から『アンバー』の色が伝わった際に和訳してできたものでしょう。書籍などでも古くから「琥珀」の名前自体は見られますが、それは石や装飾品としてであり、色名ではありませんでした。

琥珀（こはく）

琥珀（こはく）とは、太古の樹脂類が土中で石化した鉱物で、古くは「くはく」、「あかだま」とも呼ばれた。瑪瑙（めのう）などとともに貴石とされ、大部分は不透明な『黄橙色』をしており、これがいわゆる『琥珀色』である。

琥珀は研摩して飾り石として用いられ、昆虫の入ったものは「虫入り琥珀」としてとくに珍重される。

『琥珀色』は、琥珀の柔らかく温かみのある質感や色合いを連想させることから、ウイスキーのように『黄橙色』の半透明の液体をやや詩情を込めて表現する際に好んで使われています。

The Kohaku-iro, or amber color, is a translucent yellow-brown reminiscent of the amber stone. In English, it is known as "amber."

This color is not traditional to Japan but rather a term that emerged in literary works from the Meiji era onward, likely as a Japanese translation when the color "amber" was introduced from the West. Although the name "kohaku" has been seen in books and other writings for a long time, it referred to the stone or ornament, not as a color name.

Kohaku (Amber)

Kohaku (amber) is a mineral formed from ancient resins that have fossilized underground. Historically, it was also called "kuhaku" and "akadama." Along with agate and other gemstones, it was considered precious. Most amber is opaque yellow-orange, which is the so-called "amber color."

Amber is polished and used as a decorative stone, and pieces containing insects are particularly prized as "insect amber."

The term "amber color" is favored when poetically describing translucent yellow-orange liquids, such as whiskey, evoking the soft and warm texture and hue of amber.
