色の説明
苔色（こけいろ）とは、苔のような深く渋い黄緑色のことです。色名の由来はもちろん苔の色からきています。平安時代からの由緒ある色名ですが、現代では『モスグリーン（ Moss green）』のほうが一般的かもしれません。
元々は重 ねの色目で、「表・濃萌黄、裏・濃萌黄」などを配し、夏に用いられていました。ちなみに、平安文学に『苔衣 』の言葉が見られますが、これは苔を衣に見立てた僧侶や隠者の粗末な衣服を差しており、『苔色』の衣を表しているわけではありません。
苔はコケ植物の苔類、蘇類など花の咲かない背の低い植物の総称。日本には約2000種類もあり、日本庭園や盆栽で利用されるほか、我が国の国歌「君が代」で歌われるなど古くから日本人に親しまれてきた植物です。
苔生 した老木や苔に覆われた庭石の味わい深さは、侘び寂びに代表される日本人の美意識の象徴といえます。そのため、そこから生まれた『苔色』には日本文化の片鱗をみることができるといえるでしょう。

[Explanation of a color]
Kokeiro (苔色) refers to a deep, subdued yellow-green color reminiscent of moss. As its name suggests, it is derived from the color of moss. While it has been recognized as a traditional color name since the Heian period, the term "Moss Green" is perhaps more commonly used in modern times.
Originally, it was used in layered color schemes (kasane no irome), such as pairing "outer: Deep Moegi (濃萌黄), inner: Deep Moegi," and was associated with summer. Interestingly, the term koke-goromo (苔衣) appears in Heian literature, referring to the humble clothing of monks or hermits, likened to moss-covered garments. However, it does not specifically denote garments dyed in Kokeiro.
Moss refers to non-flowering, low-growing plants like bryophytes and lycophytes. Japan is home to approximately 2,000 species of moss, which have been cherished for centuries. Moss is prominently featured in Japanese gardens and bonsai, and it is even mentioned in the national anthem, "Kimigayo," making it a plant deeply ingrained in Japanese culture.
The charm of moss-covered old trees and garden stones embodies the aesthetic of wabi-sabi, a hallmark of Japanese sensibility. In this sense, Kokeiro offers a glimpse into the essence of Japanese culture.
